Each year, the American Cancer Society encourages smokers to participate in the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November by quitting tobacco (or making a plan to quit) that day. With November 21, 2013 just 2 weeks away, it’s a great time to talk to your patients, co-workers, and/or loved ones who smoke about their desire to quit. It might even be something to think about for yourself.
Quitting can be extremely difficult, and until an individual is ready, it can be downright impossible. Be respectful when raising the subject, and remember that the decision is theirs to make. If they do decide to quit, your support can make a huge difference. Learn how you can help increase their chance of success with advice from organizations and campaigns such as the American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and smokefree.gov.
