November is National Home Care and Hospice Month and the HHQI National Campaign would like to recognize the hard work of nurses, aides, social workers, therapists, administrators, family caregivers, counselors and other professionals who selflessly offer health support. Every day, these healthcare providers serve with compassion and expert skill in countless homes across the country and it’s important to thank those men and women who play a central role in our healthcare system. These individuals make an outstanding difference for the patients and the families they serve each day.
So often home care professionals are rewarded by appreciative patients and their caregivers who are relieved to have a team of professionals overseeing the care of their loved one. Home care and hospice services are crucial aspects to our healthcare system. With the rapid rise in the U.S. senior population, the demands steadily increase for home care and hospice providers and these professionals and caregivers will continue to be a much-needed resource.
As we embark on this Thanksgiving season, I’d like to take a moment to thank those who work in the home care and hospice field. Many of us have experienced first-hand the benefit of home care or hospice services for a family member or friend. Or perhaps you’ve found yourself on the other side of the bedrails as a patient yourself? I know how tremendously helpful hospice providers were in August 2014, during what had to be one of the most difficult times for my family. My mother-in-law, at age 71, made a call to hospice after deciding not to continue treatment for her stage IV breast cancer. Her decision to enroll in hospice was the best thing she could have done for herself and for our family. Their ability to keep her comfortable and give us a sense of peace during a very difficult time was invaluable, and I can’t help but think of this experience as I reflect on celebrating National Home Care and Hospice Month.
Please join HHQI in applauding all of the home care and hospice agencies around the country and their commitment to providing care for the patients and families they serve.
